Bastar Region

  • Bastar region located in Southern part of Chhattisgarh consists of five districts Dantewada, Jagdalpur, Kanker, Narayanpur, Bijapur. ADI under the aegis of Bharatiya Kushtha Niwarak Sangh in two districts viz: Dantewada and Kanker.

  • Baster battisa temple

  • The people live in small scattered villages which lack basic communication facilities such as roads, phones or postal services .
  • The people thus have minimum or no contact with people in town or cities.

  • Baster tribal couple

  • The employment opportunities are minimal and for livelihood people mostly depend on subsistent farming (rain fed paddy) and collecting forest products.( Tendu pata, Tamarind, honey)
  • The farm produce is limited and is mostly used to feed the family. Due to lack of transport and marketing facilities the forest products are sold to local traders and fetch minimum price which barely cover labor cost
  • Almost 90 percent population of the region is below poverty line. As a result malnutrition is rampant.
  • Access to education is limited and literacy rate is low
  • Further primary health care facilities are inadequate and not accessible for population in remote villages. People seldom see doctor for cure. Most women give birth at home and infant mortality rates continues to be very high.
  • The awareness about environmental sanitation is very poor. Most house-hold do not have latrines and open defecation is common. Similarly personal hygiene practice is far from being adequate.
  • As result of the above people suffer from water borne and hygiene related diseases
  • The normal diet consists of rice. The people seldom consume milk, green vegetables and or meat. As such most people suffer from protein deficiency anemia.
  • In general the people are mal-nourished. Nutrition deficiency is high among women and children
  • Malnutrition among the women is main reason for Low Birth Weight of children.
  • Yet another health problem observed among the tribal and backward communities of the region is sickle cell anemia.
  • Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disorder and is caused due to deformity of the red blood cell from circular to sickle form. At present medical cure is not available for the Sickle cell deformity.
  • It is observed that more than 20 % population in the region suffers from the Sickle cell disorder.
  • To sum-up it can be said that the socio-economic status of the tribal in Bastar is far below the national standard.
  • The low socio-economic condition is associated with poverty, lack of awareness about personal hygiene, health care & nutrition and livelihood skills to increase productivity using local resources.
